John  Russell Smith enlisted in the Army on June 10, 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia. He was the son of Spencer Rogers Smith and Annie Temperence (Boring) Smith. He married his wife, Barbara (Goodman) Smith, on January 13, 1942 in Dalton, Georgia.
