Michael Karnitz, 79, passed away on April 13, 2023, at UT hospital after a long battle with cancer.Mike was a member of St John Neumann Catholic Church. He was born on March 8,1944 in Muskegon, Michigan. He earned a Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Michigan State University. He worked at Consumers Power Company in Jackson, Michigan and then at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 31 years in the Energy Division. Mike enjoyed boating, playing racquetball and camping. He volunteered at the Farragut Museum and was instrumental in having a statue of Admiral Farragut constructed outside the Town Hall. He also volunteered for over 20 years at Pleasant Forest Cemetery assisting families with finding a suitable burial plot.Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Marie Karnitz and brothers Jim and Terry Karnitz. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dolly; son, Steve Karnitz; daughter, Sherry (Frank) Bullard; three grandsons, Leo and Evan Karnitz and Luke Bullard; brother, Denny (Barb) Karnitz; sister, Becky (Tom) Fredericksen; several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at St. John Neumann Church in Farragut on Saturday, April 15 at 11:00 am with a reception following the service.
