In 1930 Oacie Cloud and his family were living in Harlan County, Kentucky, where his father, Joseph, worked as a driver in a coal mine. By 1940, Oacie was living with his widowed mother, Martha, in Tennessee. He enlisted in the Army on July 29, 1942, at Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia and was inducted as a private
